A terminally ill 6-year-old boy named Levi Mayhew was offered a gift from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Instead of using it himself he wished a trip to Disneyland for the little girl writing him letters of encouragement. She went to Florida carrying a cutout photo of him on all the rides she could. It’s really awful when people take advantage your inability to fully explain your thoughts due to difficulty translating thoughts into speech/words and use it to say they’re right because they can articulate their shitty view better.

Story Time

I’m a native Long Islander, and as such I spent a lot of time growing up swimming in the various public beaches the area had to offer.

Once, when I was about ten, I was swimming at Robert Moses State Park in the mid-Summer. The waters could get rough, but not completely chaotic. The deep forest green color of the ocean water meant you couldn’t see past your nipples when swimming, which means your feet were pretty much skimming along sand in some mysterious abyss.

At the corner of my eye, I kept seeing what I thought was a piece of a brown cardboard box floating around in the water. I wasn’t too concerned, but I thought it was odd that it kept submerging and re-emerging. Sea life (other than mole crabs, jellyfish, and saltwater minnows) wasn’t too common around there, so in my mind, it was definitely a cardboard box. After a few minutes, it completely submerged and I stopped thinking about it.

My mom called me and my brother back to shore, so we started running along the bottom like we normally do.

Without warning, my left foot felt like a  thousand pins and needles stabbed it at once. It was such a jolt of pain that I shrieked and jumped.

I accidentally stepped on the underside of a horseshoe crab. The same brown thing that was floating around earlier.

It was fine, but it traumatized me for a while. To this day, I still feel paranoid when I walk along the sands in shallow water.

This scene will forever be the most important scene in any movie to me.  This is a little girl who has been told all her life by her parents that she is a mistake and that she is worthless.  This is a little girl whose family life is so horrible that books are her only escape.  This is a little girl whose parents constantly belittle her for reading, the only pleasure in life she has.  And in this scene, this little girl answers very shyly, because she has been conditioned to be embarrassed of her own existence.  At first, she answers slowly, and without making eye contact. And in this scene this little girl is beginning to realize that maybe she is special.  Maybe there are kind people in the world.  Maybe she is worth something.
